General hospital Ernakulam

General hospital Ernakulam is 783 bedded multi specialty hospital is one of the most well-equipped government hospital in Kerala. It is situated in the heart of the Kochi city. The hospital was started in 1845 by then the Maharaja of Cochin. Since then the Hospital has come a long way with the commitment and passion of dedicated healthcare professionals. The hospital administration was taken over by government of Kerala after the state was formed and is presently under the direct control over the district medical officer.

General Hospital Ernakulam is the first NABH Accredited General Hospital in the state.

General Hospital, Ernakulam is a silent crusader in the field of community services in its own dedicated way. It is the largest and the most well equipped Govt. hospital in Kerala. General Hospital Ernakulam is the first NABH Accredited General Hospital in the state. Recently the hospital was recognized with the prestigious national level NQAS Certification by the Govt. of India .GH Ernakulam won the ‘Kayakalp’ Award on behalf of the Swachatha abhiyan in 2016 with prize money of Rs. 50 Lakhs. General Hospital Ernakulam got SKOCH Order of Merit Award in 2018 and FICCI award for Best Hospital in Public Sector in 2012. The hospital has 783 beds and the daily outpatient turnover is an excess of 2800 patients. Recently hospital has been upgraded to the status of super specialty institution.

The Institution has state of the art facilities including LINAC for radiation therapy, 24 hour Regional Diagnostic Lab, MRI, CT scan, Cardiac Cathlab for Angiography and Angioplasties, Color Doppler Echocardiography. The hospital has a Therapeutic Dietary department which provides four nutritious meals including evening tea and snacks prepared under stringent hygienic conditions to the patients at their bed side free of cost.  General hospital Ernakulam has been providing quality health care to a large population in Ernakulam and neighboring districts of Alappuzha, Idukki, Thrissur and Palakkad. The hospital has virtually become the lifeline for the poor and underprivileged.

We have been performing complex cardiac interventional procedures including angioplasties and pacemaker implantations, elective as well as emergency Hemodialysis, Peritoneal dialysis, CRRT, Renal biopsies, open as well endoscopic Urological surgeries, Plastic and Reconstructive surgeries, complex surgeries  for cancer patients, Neurosurgeries, thrombolytic therapy for acute stroke, Epilepsy clinics, Nerve Conduction studies. Over these years, our institution has grown as the state of the art centre which caters to referrals even from the nearby corporate hospitals in private sector. The poorest of the poor in our society have been enabled with accessible tertiary health care which is most of the time free of cost under the Karunya Arogya Suraksha Padhathi or the Karunya Benevolent Scheme.
