Radiotherapy

The Radiotherapy facility in General Hospital Ernakulam was established way back in the 1970s The radiotherapy department is focused on delivering radiation with outstanding care, and support to cancer patients with advanced technology and highly precise therapy delivery techniques. The department is equipped with a Linear accelerator, Two Telecobalt units, a High dose rate Brachytherapy unit and a CT simulator. We are providing the state of Art treatment techniques Such as Volumetric Arc Therapy (VMAT), Intensity Modulated Radiation therapy (IMRT),Three-dimensional conformal radiation Therapy (3DCRT), Two-dimensional treatment (2D), Electron Therapy and High Dose Brachy Therapy. General Hospital Ernakulam is the only hospital under the Health service department having Linear accelerator treatment Facility which ensures high-precision treatment with minimal side effects. We are following the NCCN and ICMR guideline for Radiation planning and treatment.

Department Highlights

  • Linac – Advanced radiotherapy facility is provided using Elekta Synergy Platform –Linear Accelerator with MV imaging. This is a triple energy unit which is capable of providing VMAT,IMRT, and 3DCRT.For Electron therapy, five ranges of electron energies are available in this unit.
  • Treatment planning is done with Monaco 5.51.1 treatment planning software with Equivalent Uniform Dose (EUD) Optimization facility.
  • Advanced cobalt unit -Bhabhatron II TAW, has an asymmetric collimator, anti-collision device and Motorized wedge facility to increase the treatment accuracy and patient comfort.
  • A well-equipped Mould room facility is available for patient immobilization set up for fine treatment positioning of each patient during treatment.
  • Siemens Somatom Scope 32 slice CT scanner serves as a CT simulator for imaging and treatment simulation.
  • Micro Selectron HDR unit with Oncentra Treatment planning system used for the internal radiation treatments.
  • The department consists of Radiation Oncologist, Medical Physicist and AERB licensed Technologists.
