Department of Microbiology act as the regional centre to coordinate the AMR initiative under DHS across the state. AMR surveillance in the district function on a unique ‘hub-and-spoke’ model, with District AMR lab at GH Ernakulum being the ‘hub’ that collects and tests samples from 13 government hospitals that are the ‘spokes’, thus avoiding the need for separate, expensive laboratories at each of these hospitals. District AMR lab (Microbiology lab ) at the Ernakulum General Hospital has been working to help diagnose secondary infections in COVID patients also , and determine patterns of drug-resistance. Ernakulam is the first district in the state to have comprehensive AMR Program as Hub& Spoke Model. Around 2000 culture sample processed at District AMR lab at GH Ernakulam and participating in WHONET AMR surveillance, the data is shared with NCDC through nodal centre.
Two national and one international research paper published from AMR centre and first D AMR Research centre under health service department to facilitate research work in AMR.
